Online Tests Are apart of our process, you’ll complete a series of online and in-person assessments, including:
Situational Judgement Test – completed online during your initial application.
 MMI (Multi-Module Interviews).

Assessment, If you’re successful in the online stages, you’ll be invited to take part in a short video assessment so we can get to know you better.

Interview, A competency-based interview will follow.

Top tips to secure a role at GWR 

Show a Genuine Passion for Customer Service
GWR hires people who genuinely enjoy helping others whether the role is customer-facing or not.

Give examples of times you’ve gone “above and beyond.”
Use STAR (Situation–Task–Action–Result) to structure examples.
 

Demonstrate Safety Awareness
Safety is a core value in the rail industry.

Highlight experience in safety-critical environments (if applicable).
Show you understand responsibility, attention to detail, and adherence to procedures.

Understand GWR’s Values
Familiarise yourself with values like:
Putting customers first
Working as one team
Being committed to doing the right thing

Use these values in your answers with real examples of how you embody them.

Tailor Your Application to the Specific Role
Generic applications get overlooked.

Carefully match your skills to the job description.
Use clear, concise language.
Highlight transferable skills communication, teamwork, resilience.
 

 

Practise for Online Assessments 
Depending on the role, assessments may include:

Numerical reasoning
Verbal reasoning
Situational judgement
Safety/compliance tests
Practising in advance improves confidence and scores

Research the Business and Network
Knowing the routes, services, challenges, and customer base helps you stand out.
Show awareness of:

GWR’s network
Recent improvements or projects e.g accessibility, digital tickets, timetable changes
 

 

Prepare for Behavioural Interviews
Expect questions like:

“Tell us about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.”
“Describe a time you worked as part of a team to achieve something important.”
Prepare several strong examples in advance.
