Engineering Description

Who are we?

GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world.  We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services.   With more than one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful country and some of the UK's top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from all different backgrounds to make it a great experience for our customers.  Together, we will revalue rail as a very special way to travel – relaxing, fast, efficient, friendly and fun.

Your Role

To lead the delivery of the IET (Intercity Express Train) fleet into service every day for GWR, working with all GWR directorates and functions as well as the train maintainer (Hitachi) and the fleet owners (Agility and Eversholt) to ensure that that GWR's customers experience a safe, clean, well presented and high performing train fleet.

To ensure that GWR, Hitachi, Agility and Eversholt discharge their contractual obligations; specifically, as defined under the TARA (Train Availability and Reliability Agreement) and TSA (Train Service Agreement), but also more generally, any other contractual obligations in relation to this fleet.

In so doing you will ensure such work is completed safely, to timescale, quality and cost targets

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of the IET fleet into service every day.
  • Lead the IET team in identifying, evaluating and making recommendations that will improve the operational response to IET fleet incidents and improve service performance.
  • Lead on cross-functional working groups delivering performance, service quality, safety and other aspects of service delivery, promoting cross-functional co-operation across GWR.
  • Ensure that GWR's financial commitments are protected and do not exceed its contractual obligations held under the relevant contractual framework and that any variations to the contracts represent good value for money and are approved under the company's financial governance procedures.
  • Ensure relevant contractual and commercial information for both the TARA and TSA contracts is disseminated across GWR as required to ensure awareness at appropriate levels.
  • Ensure Hitachi and its suppliers execute their obligations under the TARA and TSA framework in order to facilitate passenger services that are safe, of an exemplary standard of presentation and perform as a minimum to the specified standards.
  • Ensure Hitachi are held to account for poor performance and any other such failure to deliver as identified within the KPI regime and as such any financial adjustment is recovered through the contractual framework and mechanisms.
  • Ensure Hitachi develop and manage the implementation of improvement plans to enhance safety, reliability and business performance
  • Support GWR depots delivering under the TSA contract where needed and required.
  • Represent GWR at contract review meetings with Hitachi, Agility, Eversholt and the Department for Transport and any other meeting so far as needed to ensure GWR's interests are protected.
  • Accountable for the review of financial invoices prepared by Hitachi to ensure availability adjustments and operational and service quality performance penalties are applied accurately and that payments are correct.
  • Ensure periodic reports are completed in full and to the required standard.
