Hello Libby. I’m 49 years old but still dreaming about becoming a train driver like my father and grandfather were.

Lukasz M. asked a question to Libby S.

Is that even possible at my age? All my life I was a barber but always wanted to follow a family tradition in railway. Kind Regards Luca

    Hi Luca,

It is absolutely possible at your age, there are no upper age limits for applying to become a train driver. The competition is often fierce due to the popularity of the role, so I would just suggest applying when you next see a trainee opportunity advertised and see where it takes you.

The only minimum requirements are as follows:

    • You must be at least 20 years of age to be accepted on to the training course, as this is an industry requirement
    • You'll need to live within 60 minutes travel time to the depot, without using public transport when it is not available. The safety responsibilities make this requirement a necessity
    • You will be needed to work shifts of varying start times, including weekends and nights
    • You'll need to pass a full driver medical which includes hearing, sight, and colour vision tests (using the Ishihara plates).

Any opportunities within GWR will always be found here and any with Avanti West Coast here. Each of those pages also has a job alert facility that you can register to, to ensure you're notified by email whenever a vacancy is advertised that matches your set criteria.
