I am interested in becoming a train manager please. Is that a role that can be trained for directly or do I need to start in another role and work my way up please? I am also interested in doing an apprenticeship for customer host or conductor.

Those roles that you've mentioned all have the necessary training provided for new starters. As such, you do not need to already be performing that role or have done so in the past, in order to apply.
What I will advise however, is that many of our Conductors and Train Managers would have initially begun their careers at GWR as Customer Hosts, as that it a common progression route.
