I would like to ask you based on your experience...do you think it is worth it taking a engineering transportation master degree to learn about operations and planning? or what's the best way to learn about operation and planning of public transportation?

Juan V. asked a question to Paul A.

Thanks in advance

    Hi Juan,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

If you wish to work in a more strategically based planning role then the master's degree route may be a good choice, however if you're more interested in day-to-day operational planning such as control, performance, and service delivery, then seeking industry experience may be the better path to take, as operational experience is often more sought after by employers than academia.

Learning operations from inside an organisation will more often than not be of greater benefit than external studies, so if you're already in a role within this field, then continuing to progress within may suit you better in the long run. If however, you don't currently have any experience within this sector and are seeking the strategic path, then further studies could be of benefit.

I think this ultimately depends on where you are currently in your career and where you would like to be at the end of it. There is no "best" way, it really depends on your personal situation and ambitions.

    I hope that helps.
