South wales trainee conductor starting wage of over £35k. Why do GWR have such a low starting wage in comparison?

Hi team, I understand that GWR are currently in talks about receiving a potential 9% pay increase. But even with that, the starting wage for a conductor would still be considerably lower that that of others. Why is this? Is the starting wage for conductors at GWR due to be reviewed? Many thanks.

Hello Dylan and thank you for the question. The Trainee Conductor role in South Wales is very different from the GWR role, even though they have the same job title. The South Wales role has a longer training period, as a result of the wider job content, and includes an on-call responsibility. Hope this helps.
